أفاد علماء أمريكيون بأن وقف لقاح الجدري عالمياً قد يكون ساهم في انتشار فيروس مرض المناعة المكتسب "الإيدز".وأوضح العلماء وهم من جامعتي كاليفورنيا في لوس أنجلس، وجورج ماسون بفيرجينيا، أن النتائج ما زالت أولية وهى بحاجة للمزيد من الدراسات، لكن "اللقاح الذي كان يستعمل ضد الجدري كان يحتوي على مواد تعطي بعض المناعة ضد الإيدز، ولكن هذا اللقاح لم يعد يستعمل الآن"

Recently it was reported by scientists in the journal, BMC Immunology, that decreasing administration of the small pox vaccine is responsible for the exponential growth of HIV/AIDS in the 20th Century. The historical timing is interesting and the possibility that the Small Pox vaccine could protect against HIV is more than interesting as this could give researchers a quantum leap in understanding how to make an effective HIV vaccine.
